Getting Started 2: Build Your Interface

Add new Layouts (Create Screens)

Why we do it: We need screens in our application to view, edit and enter new data.

How it's done:

  1. Start with the App Builder's Block Creator tool (:40)
  2. Click the Screens Button (:42)
  3. Expand the Drag & Drop a Layout section (:46)
  4. Drop new Layouts onto your page (:55)

Drop points will appear on your page to show you where you can drop a new Layout.

We create a new List Layout in our example. The Add List Layout wizard's options allow you to use the Employer to Employee Relationship (see Getting Started 1) to restrict the Contacts shown in the List to just the Employees of ABC Company.

Adding a List Layout to a page causes WorkXpress to create two new blocks that enable you to search for and attach new or existing instances of an Item Type.

You'll have to add content for each choice in a navigational Layout. That's as simple as dragging and dropping existing Layouts under an Icon in the Ribbon.

Reuse Existing Fields

Why we do it: Fields serve two purposes in WorkXpress. First, as we learned in part one, Fields contain Details about a Concept. Second, Fields allow your users to view and manipulate data in Layouts. We need to reuse Fields we created earlier to create our application's interface.

How it's done:

  1. Start with the App Builder's Block Creator tool (1:50)
  2. Click the Details button (1:51)
  3. Expand the Drag & Drop Existing Fields section (1:53)
  4. Drop Fields onto your Layout (2:19)

When adding Layouts to your application, it's often better to reuse Fields you initially created about an Item Type than to add new Fields.
